Evening Hours at Hidden Treasures

Just a reminder, as we approach the holiday shopping season: we are open in the early evenings.

If you get off work at 5:00 PM, you can still haunt our shop until 8:30 PM on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Then on Saturdays and Sundays, we're open until 6:00 PM.

1955 Woodford County Plat book

Here's a great piece of history. A Woodford County Plat book from 1955.

What is a "Plat book"? you ask.

Wikipedia offers a good explanation:

A plat in the U.S. is a map, drawn to scale, showing the divisions of a piece of land. Other English-speaking countries generally call such a document acadastral map or plan. 

U.S. General Land Office surveyors drafted township plats of Public Lands Surveys to show the distance and bearing between section corners, sometimes including topographic or vegetation information. City, town or village plats show subdivisions into blocks with streets and alleys. 

Further refinement often splits blocks into individual lots, usually for the purpose of selling the described lots; this has become known as subdivision. After the filing of a plat, legal descriptions can refer to block and lot-numbers rather than portions of sections.

In order for plats to become legally valid, a local governing body, such as a public worksdepartment, urban planning commission, or zoning board must normally review and approve them.

Hidden Treasures in Courier Newspaper

We are so pleased to be found worthy of a Courier newspaper article "Hidden Treasures in Metamora offers vintage antiques" (September 26, 2012).

Here are some excerpts from that article...

Hidden Treasures started out as a candle and soap store dream and blossomed into a full-fledged antique store-something owners Pat and Charles McAllister never planned on but certainly welcomed.

"I was going to start a candle shop," says Pat.

Both McAllister and her husband Charles work full time. For them, shopping at antique stores was one of the hardest things to do because most were closed after 4 p.m. which was when they left work. Catering to the same crowd they were once a part of, Hidden Treasures offers an alternative for people like them. The store is open in the evenings and on weekends. The hours are Wednesday through Friday, 4-8 p.m.; Saturday, 10-6 p.m.; and Sunday, 12-6 p.m.

The couple couldn't be happier with their new company.

According to McAllister, business has been good in a town that she says, seems very happy to support two antique stores. She says that the two don't really compete but are different in what they offer. The Dusty Hutch sells antique and more primitive items while Hidden Treasures sells more vintage and less dated items. This works well for the two friends as they are able to offer Metamora a wide variety of goods. When one store doesn't have a particular item it can send people around the corner to the other store.

McAllister offers a blog, hiddentreasures4you.blogspot.com. 

Each week, the she blogs about a different item of interest, going into the history and uniqueness of the item to give people more background on the items they have for sale. Past posts have included the history and restoration of an 1870's square grand piano and the story behind the hand carved walking sticks they sell. 

The store also has a regular website that lists most in-store products where people can make online purchases and have then shipped.

Shaving Brush and Grandpa Mug

Grab a horehound candy lozenge, pop it in your mouth, then step right up to the bathroom mirror and foam up a mug of shaving cream for an old fashioned, nostalgic shave.

Hidden Treasures carries lots of great, old time items that you'll love teaching your kids and grand kids about, including this brush and mug set. Now, back to our shaving lesson.

Preliminary step: prepare your face by splashing a lot of hot water on your face, or applying a hot wet towel on it. Get your beard growth as soft as possible.

1. Take that brush, turn on the hot water spigot, stick the brush into the stream, and sterilize it.

2. Drain the excess water from the brugh, shake it a few times.

3. Work up a lather by scraping the brush bristles against the bar of shaving soap.

4. Swirl the lathered brush in circles, moving from your neck on up across your cheeks, to get it into your pores.

5. When you're all lathered up, press your razor against your skin and slide it across, cutting the beard.

NOTE: To avoid cutting yourself, never lift the razor off your skin. Instead using a sliding motion, like you're painting a wall. Slide the razor up and down, never lifting it up and pressing it back down, for that is how cuts and bleeding occur.

6. Reapply lather to any sections of beard that need a second shaving.

7. Rinse brush and mug when done.

The key to a close clean shave is the "painting" razor technique accompanied by hot water and good lather.
